Viking Libra to Be World’s First Hydrogen-Powered Cruise Ship

The world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, the Viking Libra, is set to launch a new era of sustainable maritime travel. Currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, Italy, this groundbreaking vessel will not only deliver a luxury cruise experience but also significantly reduce environmental impact. With delivery scheduled for late 2026, the ship marks a major step in the cruise industry’s decarbonization journey.

At 239 meters long and weighing 54,300 gross tons, the Viking Libra will host up to 998 guests across 499 staterooms. What sets it apart, however, is not just its design or guest experience—but its power source. This ship will store hydrogen directly onboard, using advanced fuel cell systems capable of producing up to six megawatts of energy. That’s enough power to drive the ship and meet onboard energy needs without producing harmful emissions.

Viking is also developing another hydrogen-powered vessel, the Viking Astrea, expected to debut in 2027. Both ships will feature cutting-edge fuel cell technology designed by Isotta Fraschini Motori (IFM), a Fincantieri subsidiary. These fuel cells use polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) systems optimized for cruise operations, making the technology not just futuristic, but practical for real-world use.

The Viking Libra’s modular, containerized hydrogen storage system is an innovation in itself. It offers a flexible solution to current hydrogen supply chain limitations, ensuring the ship can access and store the clean fuel needed for long journeys. This is especially important as more travelers and industry leaders call for climate-friendly alternatives in tourism.

Fincantieri and Viking’s collaboration doesn’t stop here. The two companies also announced plans to build two more cruise ships with similar features, due for delivery in 2031, with the option for two additional vessels. Like the Viking Libra, these ships will be built to meet the most modern environmental standards and navigational safety requirements.

Viking Chairman and CEO Torstein Hagen emphasized that sustainability has always been part of the company’s design approach. “Viking made the principled decision to invest in hydrogen, which offers a true zero-emission solution,” he said.

As the cruise industry works to shed its carbon-heavy past, the Viking Libra presents a bold step forward. This vessel could signal a future where luxury travel and sustainability go hand in hand—without compromise.
