Bold New Uniform Debuts for Air New Zealand Staff

Air New Zealand uniform designs have taken flight into a new era, revealing a bold collection that reflects the country’s unique cultural heritage and design innovation. The new look, worn by 6,000 staff across the globe, celebrates the airline’s deep connection to Aotearoa and its people.

The uniforms were created by world-renowned designer Emilia Wickstead, in collaboration with tā moko artist Te Rangitu Netana, who contributed bespoke hand-painted prints inspired by traditional Māori art. This partnership has resulted in a collection that tells visual stories through patterns and fabric, with each piece echoing identity, pride, and belonging.

Signature pieces include The Fine Print – Dress, featuring a delicate kōwhai print that showcases Emilia’s craftsmanship, and The Collective Thread – Shirt, which displays purapura whetū patterns, a starry design symbolizing navigation and connection. Designed to be versatile and inclusive, these pieces are made to suit both cabin crew and ground staff.

A standout element of the collection is the Ie Faitaga, a garment to be trialled by Pasifika team members. Its inclusion underscores Air New Zealand’s dedication to cultural representation and inclusivity within its workforce. Meanwhile, pilots will don sharp new pinstripe suits lined with a subtle kiwi feather motif—a symbol of leadership and national pride.

Greg Foran, Chief Executive of Air New Zealand, said the uniforms are more than just clothing: “It is a celebration of our people, our culture, and our values. Air New Zealand has never been about standing still or blending in. Our new uniform encapsulates everything we stand for—a combination of innovation, rich cultural heritage, and a deep sense of pride and belonging.”

Designer Emilia Wickstead, who was born in New Zealand, shared that the project held deep personal meaning for her. “At the heart of it was a deep respect for the heritage and the unique identity of New Zealand’s people and land. I wanted to create a uniform that empowers individuals and inspires pride in all who wear it and see it.”

Print artist Te Rangitu Netana added that every design in the collection carries a story rooted in Māori tradition. “Each print is a story, deeply rooted in the traditions and values of Aotearoa… I’m proud that these designs have found a place in Air New Zealand’s uniform, bringing te ao Māori to designs that show up all over the world.”

From the textures and tailoring to the stories woven into every thread, Air New Zealand’s new uniform is not just a visual transformation—it’s a cultural statement. As passengers step aboard, they’re greeted not only by style but by a living tribute to the spirit of Aotearoa.
