Delta Air Lines Inc. is introducing a new baggage check-in policy for domestic travelers that goes into effect Tuesday, April 8, the airline confirmed in a message to customers last week.
According to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal, Delta will now require all checked bags for domestic flights to be dropped off at least 45 minutes prior to scheduled departure. This represents a change from previous guidelines and is part of the airline’s broader effort to streamline airport operations and reduce late departures.
The updated policy also includes exceptions for select airports, such as New York’s JFK, where passengers will need to check their bags 60 minutes before departure. Delta encourages all travelers to double-check specific airport guidelines before heading to the airport.
For travelers not checking luggage, check-in times remain more flexible. Delta stated that most passengers without bags can still check in up to 30 minutes before departure, depending on the airport.
“This change is expected to impact only a few passengers, as the vast majority already check their bags at least 45 minutes before departure,” Delta said in its email announcement. The airline also continues to recommend that all domestic passengers arrive at the airport two hours prior to departure to allow ample time for security and boarding procedures.
The policy change comes as Delta, along with several other major U.S. carriers, is adjusting to a shifting travel landscape, marked by recent declines in domestic demand and broader economic uncertainty.
Travelers with upcoming Delta flights are advised to review their flight details and airport guidelines to ensure a smooth check-in experience under the new policy.
