Egypt has commenced construction on the megacity of Ras El-Hekma, which will cover an area twice the size of Barcelona. The city is expected to accommodate around 2 million residents, spanning a total area of 170 square kilometers.
Ras El-Hekma is envisioned as a “fully functional, smart, sustainable, and inclusive space on the picturesque Mediterranean coast.” By 2045, the megacity is projected to contribute $25 billion annually to Egypt’s economy, creating 750,000 jobs.
The new Mediterranean city will be located 350 kilometers northwest of Cairo and will include residential areas, resorts, golf courses, entertainment venues, hospitals, schools, universities, a yacht marina, and hotels operated by international chains. Agreements have already been signed with hotel operators Accor and Ennismore, who will manage hotels and resorts in Ras El-Hekma.
In addition, the megacity will feature a high-speed railway and an airport, ensuring that travel for over 400 million visitors will take no more than four hours.
The project is being supported by the Abu Dhabi sovereign fund ADQ, which has appointed the UAE-based company Modon as the megacity’s lead developer.
