Ferry Cancellations Sweep Across Greece as Winds Reach Force 9 Beaufort

Ferry cancellations sweep across Greece as winds reach Force 9 Beaufort, causing major travel disruptions for passengers heading to the islands. Travelers planning journeys on Monday, April 28, 2025, are facing widespread delays and service suspensions as powerful winds batter much of the country’s coastline and island regions.

The Hellenic Meteorological Service reported dangerously high wind speeds, particularly over the Aegean Sea and parts of the eastern mainland, with gusts reaching Force 8 and Force 9 on the Beaufort scale. In response, authorities have enforced sailing bans across many areas to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. Travelers are urged to confirm the status of their planned routes with local port authorities or travel agencies before departure.

Among the services most affected, the ferry Aikaterini P, which was scheduled to depart from Piraeus at 14:45 for a route through Serifos, Sifnos, Kimolos, Folegandros, Sikinos, Ios, and Thira, has been canceled. The disruption extends to its return journey as well, with the ferry’s Tuesday, April 29, departure from Thira at 08:30 also called off. Passengers who had booked this route will need to adjust their travel plans and seek alternative arrangements.

Additional cancellations include the popular Super Jet and Champion Jet catamaran services, which usually provide fast connections between Piraeus and the Cyclades islands. These high-speed vessels have suspended operations for the day due to the extreme weather conditions. Travelers who intended to use these services should expect significant delays and potential itinerary changes as they wait for the weather to improve.

Despite the widespread disruptions in the Aegean, ferry routes serving the Argosaronic Gulf remain unaffected. Connections between Piraeus and islands like Aegina, Poros, Hydra, and Spetses continue to operate on schedule, offering a reliable alternative for those still wishing to travel by sea during the stormy conditions.

With the current sailing bans and ongoing severe weather warnings, travelers across Greece are encouraged to stay informed about the latest updates and prepare for possible changes to their plans. The strong winds are expected to continue into the evening, and ferry services may only resume normal operations once conditions stabilize.
