Free Wi-Fi Coming to Millions of American Airlines Flights

Free Wi-Fi is set to become a reality for millions of travellers flying with American Airlines, thanks to a new partnership with AT&T that begins in January 2026.

Members of the airline’s AAdvantage loyalty program will be the first to benefit, enjoying unlimited free Wi-Fi access on more than 2 million flights each year. Once launched, this program will make American the domestic airline with the most planes offering complimentary high-speed inflight internet.

Sponsored by AT&T, the move marks a major shift in how U.S. passengers stay connected while flying. Inflight Wi-Fi will be available on all aircraft equipped with Viasat and Intelsat satellite connectivity, which currently covers around 90% of American’s fleet. The remaining aircraft, primarily regional planes, are also on track to receive upgrades, with over 500 planes expected to be Wi-Fi-ready by the end of 2025.

The airline recently conducted a limited test phase of the service on select routes. According to American, the performance of the high-speed connectivity exceeded expectations, giving confidence in a smooth rollout when the service officially launches next year.

Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines, said the move reflects a growing demand for onboard connectivity, stating that travelers value the ability to stay connected “whether communicating with friends, getting work done, checking in on social media or streaming their favourite subscription services.”

The airline has been focused on enhancing the customer experience across the board—from booking and boarding to inflight services—and this initiative with AT&T aligns with that strategy.

Jenifer Robertson, Executive Vice President at AT&T, echoed the sentiment, highlighting how “connectivity brings people a world of possibilities” and that this partnership reflects a shared vision between the two Texas-based companies.

For American Airlines, the move goes beyond a customer perk—it positions the carrier as a leader in tech-driven inflight experiences, adding value for loyal flyers and setting a new bar for digital convenience in the skies.

With demand for seamless digital access continuing to rise, the American-AT&T alliance ensures that staying connected won’t stop at the boarding gate.
