AmaWaterways launches its first luxury cruise on Colombia’s Magdalena River, marking a historic moment for both the river cruise industry and the future of Colombian tourism. With the debut of the 60-passenger AmaMagdalena, the company becomes the first major river cruise line to explore this lesser-known but culturally rich waterway.
The launch introduces travelers to a side of Colombia rarely seen by international visitors. Sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla, AmaMagdalena offers two seven-night itineraries—Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia—that weave through natural landscapes and cultural landmarks. Guests will experience everything from birdwatching excursions to a private celebration of the world-famous Barranquilla Carnival.
The ship itself reflects a deep collaboration with local artisans. Designed in partnership with Colombian craftspeople and led by architect Camilo Restrepo, the vessel brings together regional woodwork and sophisticated style. From the handcrafted interiors by Ocean Projects of Cartagena to staterooms built by Casa Schlegel Donado of Barranquilla, every corner tells a story of local talent and heritage.
Each suite on board ranges in size from 237 to 516 square feet and features AmaWaterways’ signature twin-balcony layout. Guests also have access to a Sun Deck pool, fitness center, a main restaurant serving Latin American-inspired cuisine, and an intimate alfresco dining space.
This expansion represents more than just a new route. It is the beginning of a broader partnership between AmaWaterways and Colombia. According to Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and CEO of AmaWaterways, the company has worked closely with riverside communities to ensure its operations support local economies.
Kristin Karst, co-founder and Chief Brand Ambassador, shared the emotional impact of the launch, noting how locals have lined the riverbanks, waving and cheering as AmaMagdalena passed by—a symbol of pride and connection for the people who live along this majestic river.
To complement the cruises, optional pre- and post-voyage land packages are available in Cartagena, Medellín, and Panama City, adding further cultural depth to the experience.
The effort has been supported by ProColombia, the national tourism agency, which sees this as an opportunity to share the country’s biodiversity, traditions, and hospitality with the world. Carmen Caballero, President of ProColombia, described the Magdalena River as a future showcase of Colombia’s beauty.
AmaWaterways plans to launch a second ship, AmaMelodia, later this year, further strengthening its commitment to Colombia’s rivers and people. As a new chapter in river cruising begins, AmaMagdalena is more than a ship—it’s a bridge between cultures and a gateway to a rediscovered destination.
