Myanmar Suspends Tourist Visas After Earthquakes

Myanmar suspends tourist visas following a devastating series of earthquakes that have rocked the central region of the country, damaging historic landmarks, transportation systems, and vital infrastructure. The government announced that no tourist visas will be issued throughout April 2025 as a safety measure during ongoing recovery efforts.

Two powerful earthquakes, including a catastrophic 6.8 magnitude quake on March 28 and a 5.5 magnitude aftershock near Meiktila on April 13, have caused widespread destruction. More than 3,600 people have died, and key cities like Bagan and Mandalay—home to world-famous temples and heritage sites—have been badly hit. Buildings, roads, hotels, and hospitals across these areas are either damaged or inaccessible.

The Ministry of Immigration and Population confirmed the temporary visa suspension, emphasizing that the measure is not permanent. Officials stated that the move is meant to protect visitors while the country deals with a national emergency. With roads cracked, electricity unreliable, and historical sites at risk of collapse, the government’s priority is now centered on rescue, relief, and repair.

Tourists already in Myanmar are being asked to remain in safe zones and follow local guidance. Authorities are working to stabilize affected areas, but aftershocks and unsafe conditions continue to slow progress. Emergency teams are surveying buildings and tourist sites for structural safety, and efforts are underway to restore water, power, and communication systems.
