Kanlaon Volcano activity has prompted the temporary closure of several major tourist destinations in La Carlota and La Castellana, Negros Occidental, as local authorities take swift action to protect both residents and travelers. The decision comes amid increasing volcanic unrest in the area, leading to heightened safety protocols and event cancellations.
In La Carlota City, tourism hotspots such as the Guintubdan Pavilion, Camp Sitio Maya, and Haguimit Hilltop Resort have been closed until further notice. Over in La Castellana, multiple well-loved locations—including Tambayan sa Calapnagan, Acantilado, Fabricanus Village, Natures View Café, Domeino Suites, Highland Vista Resort, La Blanca Resort, and 13th Café—have also been affected. Additionally, trekking at Magon-on Falls in San Carlos City has been suspended due to safety concerns.
These closures follow an earlier cancellation of the Bailes de Luces Festival in La Castellana, a major cultural event that typically draws large crowds. With the volcano’s activity intensifying, local government units are focusing efforts on risk management and preventive measures to avoid any potential danger to visitors.
Despite the temporary disruptions, Negros Occidental’s tourism sector has remained remarkably strong. According to data from the Provincial Tourism Division, the province recorded approximately P7.925 billion in tourist receipts. This represents a significant 27.25% increase in visitor arrivals compared to the previous year.
The total number of excursionists in 2024 reached 3.236 million, comprising 3.173 million domestic travelers and 63,164 international tourists. The region also hosted 883,514 overnight guests, including 3,387 international and 860,127 domestic visitors.
Local tourism officials have praised the collaborative response from local government units, tourism partners, and community stakeholders. Their combined efforts have helped sustain momentum in the industry despite the challenges posed by natural hazards.
As authorities continue to monitor Kanlaon’s behavior closely, tourism operators are encouraged to stay updated through official channels. Travelers are advised to check for real-time advisories and plan trips accordingly. While safety remains the top priority, the resilience shown by the tourism industry in Negros Occidental reflects a determined push to preserve the province’s appeal for future visitors.
