Starlux Airlines Brings Taiwan Flights to Ontario, California

Starlux Airlines is expanding its Taiwan-U.S. network with the introduction of nonstop flights between Taipei Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) and Ontario International Airport (ONT). Launching on June 2, this new 4X-weekly service will offer an alternative to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) for travelers flying between Taiwan and Southern California.

The airline will operate the route using a 306-seat Airbus A350-900, featuring a four-class configuration to accommodate both business and leisure travelers. With this addition, Starlux’s U.S. schedule will grow to 28X-weekly roundtrip flights by July, including 10X-weekly flights to LAX and daily service to San Francisco (SFO) and Seattle (SEA).

A Strategic Expansion in Southern California

Ontario International Airport has become an attractive gateway for airlines looking to serve Southern California’s large Asian communities while bypassing the congestion of LAX. The Taipei-Ontario route caters to the region’s substantial Taiwanese American population, which Census data estimates at 263,000—167,000 of whom reside in the Greater Los Angeles area.

Starlux will be the second airline operating TPE-ONT flights, joining China Airlines, which launched the route in 2018. While China Airlines suspended service from March 2020 to June 2021 due to the pandemic, it currently offers daily flights using a mix of Airbus A350-900 and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

Meeting Growing Demand for Taiwan-U.S. Travel

The Taipei-Los Angeles market remains the busiest Taiwan-U.S. city pair, recording 345,000 two-way passengers in 2024, according to Sabre Market Intelligence. However, demand is also strong for Taipei-San Francisco (281,000 passengers) and Taipei-New York (169,000 passengers), highlighting sustained interest in transpacific travel.

By adding Ontario to its growing U.S. network, Starlux Airlines is providing greater flexibility and convenience for passengers while reinforcing its competitive presence in the Taiwan-California travel market.
