Danish architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has unveiled the design for Gelephu International Airport in Bhutan, with the terminal set to open in 2029.
The airport is a key part of the Gelephu Mindfulness City master plan, which aims to establish an economic and sustainable growth hub in the Himalayan foothills.
A Gateway to the Future
Located in Bhutan’s Sarpang district, the airport is projected to handle 1.3 million passengers annually by 2040, with capacity increasing to 5.5 million by 2065. It is expected to accommodate 123 daily flights, making it a major aviation hub for the region.
Covering 68,000 square meters, Gelephu International Airport will become Bhutan’s second airport, complementing Paro International Airport.
A Blend of Tradition and Innovation
The terminal’s glulam timber framework will feature intricate traditional Bhutanese wood carvings crafted by local artisans. This design element draws inspiration from kachen, the decorative wooden columns found in Bhutanese architecture. From a distance, the terminal’s silhouette will resemble a stylized mountain range, blending seamlessly with its surroundings.
At the heart of the terminal, an open-air courtyard called Forest Spine will divide the space into domestic and international sections. The design emphasizes floor-to-ceiling windows and abundant natural light, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. Dedicated areas for yoga and gong meditation will further enhance the passenger experience.
Sustainability at Its Core
The project incorporates sustainable technologies, including:
- Photovoltaic solar panels on the roof for renewable energy,
- Passive cooling techniques to regulate indoor temperatures,
- Wide overhangs to provide shade and protect against the elements.
Gelephu International Airport is poised to become a symbol of Bhutan’s commitment to sustainability and mindful development, offering travelers an airport experience deeply rooted in nature, culture, and innovation.
